Nintendo respond to Wii breakages

Games firm Nintendo has said it will replace all broken straps for its Wii console, following customer complaints.

The strap is connected to a motion sensitive remote which is used to control the on-screen action.

The announcement follows reports about the wrist straps breaking during use, leading to the controller slipping out of hands, smashing TVs and windows.

Nintendo said the straps do not present a problem if used correctly, but will still replace all broken ones for free.

In addition all new Wiis will come with an "enhanced" strap which should not be as prone to breakages.

The Japanese firm has also recalled 200,000 AC adapters for its DS and DS Lite consoles in Japan. Nintendo said the recall would not affect overseas adapters , and company executives expected only a small impact on earnings.

The problem with the straps, originally reported as a major recall, affects all Nintendo Wiis sold worldwide and almost all units currently on shelves in shops. Nintendo has targeted sales of four million Wii consoles by the end of 2006.

Holiday is boring, yeah it is boring, so i got nothing to do.Suddenly,when i was building castle in the air, Windows Vista pops out in my mind so i get a copy of Vista and i installed it on my brother's laptop.Windows Vista is awesome and of course, better than XP, but i like Windows 2000 the most cause it's very stable for lousy computer like my PC which is very very very very old.Well, some of you might said that windows vista is an OEM of Mac os X, well, it is, but, Windows Vista did some inspiration too. Well, cut the talking, here's some screenshot of Windows Vista which is installed into my brother's laptop.Hope you like it.

Motor Storm promises to be one of the most impressive titles for PlayStation 3

Sony's PlayStation is to challenge Microsoft's Xbox in its one undisputed area of dominance - the online world.

The PlayStation 3 will be "network ready" out of the box when it launches in November and will offer a range of services similar to Xbox Live.

"The entertainment world is changing," said Sony's Jamie MacDonald at a conference in London, "and gaming is moving to a network-centric world".

Speaking to developers, he said online games would transform the industry.

Mr MacDonald, vice-president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Worldwide Studios, said: "The PlayStation 3 has been designed so that the network experience is part of the PlayStation experience.

"It is easy to connect, easy to download files."

He said development studios had to re-think their strategies for games releases, arguing that the online space gave them a powerful new relationship with studios.

He said: "But the relationship will only start at the point of sale in the network-centric world. Developers have to change their whole approach."

By 2009, the online games market is expected to be worth about $14.9bn annually.

Mr MacDonald said services such as downloadable content, upgrades and episodic content meant developers would no longer be able to say a product was finished once it had been released.

He said bigger companies would be ideally placed to deal with the extra physical and financial resources needed to develop for a next-generation console.

Smaller companies and freelance staff could be used as outsourced talent to work on specific elements of a game.

He said: "There is room in the network-centric world for large developers producing 20-hour triple AAA titles and for smaller developers to work on smaller projects."

Sony has launched an Electronic Distribution Initiative (EDI) which, said Mr MacDonald, could be used by smaller companies to develop titles and content for the online audience.

He likened the material produced through the EDI to low-budget, independent movies.

Xbox Live, Microsoft's online service, has grown in the last four years to incorporate game demos, trailers and movie trailers alongside offering an online gaming experience with downloadable content and extras.

Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division of Microsoft, described Xbox Live recently as the "key weapon" in the next generation console battle.

He said gamers were moving from being hardware focused to service focused and said Xbox Live offered gamers the best online services.

Mr Moore speaking at a conference in Barcelona last week, described Xbox Live as "widely admired, often copied".

Like Xbox Live, Sony's network service is to be holistic, offering gamers a consistent experience across games with options such as friends lists and match-making.

Unlike the Xbox 360, the PlayStation will incorporate a browser so that gamers can surf the web via their console.

"Part of the reason behind having a browser is because being able to connect to the web is part of the network experience," said Mr MacDonald.

Vista is the long-awaited update to Microsoft's Windows

In a few weeks time Microsoft is expected to launch Vista, its new operating system, and in January we will all get to play with the finished version. But how safe will this brave new world be?

Given the number of attacks Windows usually attracts it is not surprising that Microsoft has been speaking to anyone they think can help.

A team from Microsoft headquarters went to Malaysia for Asia's biggest gathering of hackers - not to confront the enemy - but to throw the hackers a party.

But behind the charm offensive, said Microsoft's Security Programme Manager Sarah Blankinship, lies a serious purpose.

"We come to conferences like Hack in the Box to engage with the security researcher community, to deepen our existing relationships, to understand new technologies, tools and methodologies, and ultimately to help us make our products more secure and to keep our customers safer."

Open relationship

Hack in the Box brings together hackers, security professionals and the companies who rely on their expertise.

Together they may determine whether 2007 is a good or bad year for Microsoft, because security will probably make or break Vista, its first new operating system since XP's security-plagued release six years ago.

As Mike Davis from Honeynet explained, there has been a shift of culture that has led Microsoft to open up and engage with the hackers.

"Everybody sees them as the big evil empire that nobody's ever going to be able to change, but in actuality they are changing. They're making a lot of strides to communicate more with researchers, the community.

"They're inviting people into their home, to the Microsoft campus to tell them what's wrong with their code, how they can fix it.
"They're asking for help instead of just standing at the top of their mountain and saying 'we are the best'."

The Microsoft team's top priority is a discussion about an apparent flaw in Vista security.
They say they are here to listen - but are they? Joanna Rutkowska, a security researcher for Coseinc, is not so sure.

"After I presented my findings at the Ciscern conference in Singapore in July, about how to bypass Vista kernel protection, I still don't feel that Microsoft is going to take it very seriously.

"I talked to some Microsoft engineers a couple of days ago and they say they're not sure that they're going to do anything about this."

Competition concerns

At Hack in the Box, Microsoft's Doug MacIver gave an insiders take on security flaws in Vista. He is an expert in the platform's BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Integrating tighter security features into the new OS seems a logical step, but is it fair?

The European Union has already voiced concern that by including features traditionally bought from independent suppliers, Microsoft is being anti-competitive.

John Viega from McAfee also seems to think so: "I think it's pretty unfortunate that Microsoft is here to cosy up to the security industry when they're working so hard to lock security vendors off their platform.

"With Vista, their new operating system, they're trying to keep vendors off by putting security technologies on that ensure that they have control over who can offer protection and who can't."

While the security software firms may feel cold-shouldered, the hackers are happy to enjoy a drink with Microsoft, especially when the "evil empire" is buying.

But the question is: will the hackers still respect Microsoft in the morning? If there was an answer at Hack in the Box it was a resounding "maybe".

They like the charm offensive, they are just not sure how long it is going to last.
